Getting here
You can fly into Palermo or Trapani. From either airport the drive takes a little over an hour without traffic.
Both airports have hire car desks in the arrivals hall. You will want the car during your stay as well: Scopello, the beaches and the Zingaro reserve are a few kilometres away, and there is free parking for several cars at the villa.
We wouldn’t recommend the train. The nearest station, Castellammare del Golfo, is 13 km away, and the direct line between Palermo and Trapani has been closed since 2013.

Beaches
Around Scopello the coast is mostly pebbles and rock, broken up by small bays. If you would rather have sand, La Playa in Castellammare is a long, gently shelving beach with plenty of lidos. Below the cliff west of the sand, the 2026 bathing decree lists a stretch of 110 m as closed.
| Beach | Distance |
|---|---|
| Tonnara di Scopello | 3.2 km |
| Closed since the end of September 2026. Sicily’s 2026 bathing decree lists 900 m of coast at the Tonnara and the Faraglioni as closed to swimmers; you can still see the rock stacks from the shore or from a boat. | |
| Cala dell’Ovo | 3.6 km |
| A small cove of pebbles and rock, 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Scopello. The path runs past a residential area, so check access on the spot. No facilities; water shoes help, and it is less suited to small children. | |
| Guidaloca | 3.7 km |
| This sheltered bay of pebbles and some sand is good for families with children. Paid parking is right next to it, and there are small lidos, showers and bars. Sicily’s 2026 bathing decree lists 130 m at its eastern end as closed. | |
| Cala Mazzo di Sciacca | 4.3 km |
| White pebbles and a little sand, down a short path from the road. The walk into the Zingaro starts here. No beach club, but a kiosk hiring out umbrellas and loungers is reported. Only a few parking spaces along the road. | |
| Cala Rossa | 4.9 km |
| Pebbles at the foot of a flight of steps, no facilities. Easier to reach from the sea. | |
Riserva dello Zingaro
Sicily’s first nature reserve protects about 7 km of coast between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo, with pebble coves and no road. The south entrance is about 1 km beyond Scopello, roughly 10 minutes by car from the villa.
- Entry
- €5, children under 8 free. Card payment only, no cash.
- Dogs
- Not allowed, not even on a lead.
- Coastal path
- About 7 km, roughly two hours each way. There is little shade and the wells along the path have no drinking water, so bring plenty.
- Opening times
- They change with the season; check the current times on riservazingaro.it.
- After the fire
- A large fire in July 2025 caused heavy damage. Both entrances and the whole coastal path have been open again since May 2026.
- From the sea
- Boat trips along the reserve leave from Castellammare.

Eating out and shopping
Restaurants and wine
Scopello has a handful of restaurants and bistros close by. For more choice, drive to Castellammare del Golfo, where the harbour promenade, Via Don Leonardo Zangara, is lined with bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours.
Our favourites on the promenade: La Tonnara for fish, Booga Wooga for Mediterranean food, aperitivo and cocktails, and Luxor for pizza.
For wine, we recommend Tonnino. The winery’s cellar is at Baglio Ceuso near Calatafimi-Segesta, where you can book a tasting: vinitonnino.com.
Shopping
Castellammare has several supermarkets, among them Decò and Conad, and a market every Saturday morning from 8 am to 1 pm. In Scopello you will find a few small shops.
In summer, traffic into the centre of Scopello is restricted, so the village is best explored on foot.
