A motorcycle holiday in western Sicily works best from one fixed base. From Scopello, San Vito Lo Capo, Erice, Trapani and Segesta are day trips of 36 to 61 minutes by car, Palermo is 75 km away, and the A29 motorway is toll-free. Add a route from the Italian tourist board along the coast and two Targa Florio museums.

The Zingaro nature reserve has no coastal road, so the way to San Vito Lo Capo leads around the mountain and takes an hour. The Segesta figure is the road distance, not the straight line. For the coast itself, see our guides to San Vito Lo Capo and the Zingaro reserve.

A route from the Italian tourist board

Italia.it recommends a week along the coast, starting in Messina: the SS113 along the Tyrrhenian Sea, 250 km to Palermo. The Palermo to Trapani stage has lunch in Castellammare del Golfo, then the Guidaloca bay, Scopello and the Zingaro. From there “Route 187” leads to Erice, the Via del Sale to Marsala, and then Segesta. Italia.it adds that motorcycle parking in Palermo is free.

Two stops suit riders who like motor racing. The Museo Vincenzo Florio in Cerda (Via Roma 54) sits in the garage building of the former Alfa Romeo racing team; the Targa Florio was founded in 1906 and ran as a road race until 1977. The Targa Florio museum in Collesano is the second; its opening hours differ between two listings, so call before you go. A third stop is the Cretto di Burri near Gibellina: 86,000 square metres of concrete laid over the ruins of the old town, destroyed by the Belice earthquake of 1968. Portals report free access without a ticket; the Comune di Gibellina can tell you the rules.

Roads: the A29 and side roads

The A29 from Palermo to Mazara del Vallo is toll-free: Telepass, citing ANAS, calls it “gratuita”. The exit for Castellammare del Golfo is at km 47.7, and the exit that was partly closed for works reopened on 10 July 2026.

On smaller roads a forum thread and hire firms mention potholes in places, so plan for a few rough patches away from the main routes.

Hiring a motorcycle for a Sicily tour

Riderly lists motorcycle hire in Palermo, for example a BMW F 750 GS at 125 euro a day for three days (deposit 1,900 euro, no crossing of borders), a Moto Morini Seiemmezzo 650 at 79 euro and a Vespa Primavera 125 at 60 euro. The listing carries no year, so treat the prices as indications and ask for a current quote.

Palermo by motorcycle: check the ZTL

Palermo’s historic centre is a restricted traffic zone, the ZTL, watched by cameras at five gates, and sources differ on the hours. Whether motorcycles may enter, check at ztl.comune.palermo.it before you ride in; what to do in the city is in our article on an evening in Palermo.
