Alcamo DOC, Erice DOC and Marsala DOC
Alcamo DOC covers the whole municipality of Alcamo and parts of nine others, among them Calatafimi and Castellammare del Golfo. A white Alcamo is at least 60 per cent Catarratto, with Inzolia, Grillo, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau or Sauvignon making up the rest, and a Classico must be at least 80 per cent Catarratto. A red needs at least 60 per cent Nero d'Avola. A wine named after a single variety, such as Grillo or Syrah, must contain at least 85 per cent of it.
Erice DOC takes in all of Buseto Palizzolo and parts of Erice, Valderice, Custonaci, Paceco, Trapani and Castellammare del Golfo. It allows a wider list of types: Grillo, Catarratto, Zibibbo for the sweet Passito and Moscato (at least 95 per cent Moscato di Alessandria), Perricone, Frappato, Syrah and a sparkling wine, as well as late-harvest Zibibbo and Sauvignon.
Marsala is a different kind of wine. It is fortified, made from Grillo, Catarratto, Ansonica or Damaschino for the white and amber styles, and from Perricone, Nero d'Avola or Nerello Mascalese for the ruby. Its zone is the whole province of Trapani except Pantelleria, Favignana and Alcamo, so a bottle from the town of Alcamo cannot be a Marsala.

Tonnino is the winery the hosts recommend: its cellar is in the Baglio Ceuso at Calatafimi-Segesta, a farm estate built in 1860, with a guided cellar tour and a tasting with food. Fazio, in Fulgatore, offers a tour and tasting on weekdays at 11 and 15 hours. Firriato runs its tastings at Baglio Sorìa in eight formats, the shortest 60 minutes with four wines and olive oil. Rapitalà takes visitors only by appointment. Donnafugata lists tastings all year, with opening hours by weekday. De Bartoli pours without snacks: "the glass is the centre". Fazio and Firriato belong to the Strada del Vino Erice DOC.
Who drives? Alcohol limits in Italy
Italy's limit is 0.5 g/l for drivers who have held a licence for more than three years. Drivers in their first three years, drivers under 21 and professional drivers must have none (Art. 186 and 186-bis of the Highway Code). Reforms in 2025 and 2026 are said to have tightened the rules, so check the current version before you travel. Plan on a driver who does not drink at all, or a taxi.
